If you like reading, prepare yourself to discover all of this and more of Brazilian history and culture with these great authors of our classic literature.<\/p>\n<p>We have chosen 5 between the best writers we had along our history \u2013 all of them a must, especially if coming to the country anytime soon!<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-1762\" href=\"http:\/\/matuete.com\/wpmatuete\/2012\/06\/21\/top-5-literature\/iracema\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1762\" title=\"Iracema\" src=\"http:\/\/matuete.com\/wpmatuete\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/iracema-200x200.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>JOS\u00c9 DE ALENCAR \u2013 one of the greatest of our nineteenth century, Alencar wrote <em>Iracema<\/em>, a short romance that metaphorically tells the origins of Brazil with the story of love of a colonist with a beautiful Indian, whose death is an emblem of the extermination of the indigenous population by the Portuguese when they first colonized our lands.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-1764\" href=\"http:\/\/matuete.com\/wpmatuete\/2012\/06\/21\/top-5-literature\/machado\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1764\" title=\"Machado de Assis\" src=\"http:\/\/matuete.com\/wpmatuete\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/machado-200x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>MACHADO DE ASSIS \u2013 Considered by many the best Brazilian writer ever, his romances have very strong characters and tell how life was at nineteenth century Rio. He has many novels and short stories translated to English and other languages, but definitely one of the best is <em>Don Casmurro<\/em>, a sad and darkly comic novel about love and the corrosive power of jealous of Bentinho for his wife Capit\u00fa.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-1763\" href=\"http:\/\/matuete.com\/wpmatuete\/2012\/06\/21\/top-5-literature\/jorge-amado-acervo\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1763\" title=\"Jorge Amado\" src=\"http:\/\/matuete.com\/wpmatuete\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/jorge-amado-acervo-200x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>JORGE AMADO \u2013 he is a Bahian modern writer, author many novels about his contemporary Bahian lifestyle. If you like well written comic stories, you will fall in love for his characters \u2013 he has many books translated to English, but <em>Dona Flor and her two husbands<\/em> deserves a highlight. It\u2019s impossible not to laugh while reading Vadinho\u2019s adventures with his beautiful wife Dona Flor. If you like cooking you can even try some of Dona Flor\u2019s regional delicious recipes!<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-1765\" href=\"http:\/\/matuete.com\/wpmatuete\/2012\/06\/21\/top-5-literature\/936full-graciliano-ramos\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1765\" title=\"Graciliano Ramos\" src=\"http:\/\/matuete.com\/wpmatuete\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/936full-graciliano-ramos-200x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>GRACILIANO RAMOS \u2013 another Northeast writer, Graciliano Ramos is mostly known by his novels about the dry northeast hinterlands. His book <em>Barren Life<\/em> tells the story of a peasant family that driven by the drought, walks to exhaustion through all that arid land. It is a very dense story that is a contemporary portrait of the population that still suffers with the constant droughts.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-1768\" href=\"http:\/\/matuete.com\/wpmatuete\/2012\/06\/21\/top-5-literature\/mario\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1768\" title=\"Mario de Andrade\" src=\"http:\/\/matuete.com\/wpmatuete\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/mario-200x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>MARIO DE ANDRADE \u2013 not less important than the others, Mario de Andrade was one of the founders of Brazilian modernism, and a landmark precursor of Latin American magical realism.
